Elversberg fails in the promotion race

Drama in the 2nd Bundesliga: The first relegated team has been confirmed

Updated May 10, 2026 – 3:31 p.mReading time: 2 minutes

The 33rd matchday in the 2nd Bundesliga brings the next decision. A team can no longer be saved. At the same time, SV Elversberg missed a great opportunity.

The first relegated team from the 2nd Bundesliga has been confirmed: Preußen Münster must move to the 3rd league. The bottom of the table couldn’t get past a 1-1 (1-1) draw against Darmstadt 98 in front of their home crowd on Sunday afternoon and now has no chance of saving themselves on the last matchday.

Fortuna Düsseldorf, on the other hand, put themselves in an excellent position to avoid relegation in the parallel game against SV Elversberg. The Rhinelanders won 3-1 (2-0) and can therefore take the decisive step towards staying in the league next weekend in a direct duel with Greuther Fürth. Elversberg, on the other hand, has to be angry about having missed a great opportunity in the promotion race.

In Berlin, Greuther Fürth lost to Hertha BSC 1:2 (0:0) despite a long majority. The “cloverleaf” is tumbling towards descent. Fürth can only stay in the league with a win over Düsseldorf.

Stayed against Darmstadt Muenster also without a win in the sixth league game under new coach Alois Schwartz. Shin Yamada (8th) had initially nurtured hopes of the minimal chance of staying in the league with his early opening goal. After the equalizer by Isac Lidberg (15th), Münster made life difficult for themselves.

Captain Jorrit Hendrix had to leave the field with a red card after a violent attack against Darmstadt’s Killian Corredor (28th), Darmstadt now took control with one more man. Prussia goalkeeper Johannes Schenk was able to defuse a self-inflicted penalty in the duel with Lidberg (37th), but Münster was still far from making a comeback in the second half.
