The crenellated coat of arms was emblazoned on the VfL Wolfsburg jerseys until the early 2000s. Now it’s returning.
VfL Wolfsburg announced the change to its logo on Saturday. A few hours before the start of the top game against FC Bayern (0-1), the Lower Saxony team announced that they would be returning to the well-known battlement coat of arms. This was still emblazoned on the club’s jerseys until 2002.
“VfL Wolfsburg looks back on more than 80 years of history. The battlements have been a central component from the beginning. The battlements create identification and embody tradition,” says Sebastian Rudolph, chairman of the supervisory board, in the club’s announcement. We consciously took time to make the decision and made it together. “In an association that unites all sports and brings all people together. The battlement coat of arms is a defining element of our club culture.”
The change caused great joy, especially among the active fan scene. The VfL supporters have been fighting for the return of the crenellated coat of arms for over 20 years, as fan representative and capo Marvin Minner explained. “This is a historic and incredibly emotional moment for us.” According to the club’s announcement, this was at the end of a months-long process in which, among other things, club representatives, the fan scene and the city were involved.
Against FC Bayern, the Wolfsburg professionals also wore the jersey with the battlement coat of arms. In the new season, the old logo will be seen again on the jerseys. The club cited the almost two-year lead times in jersey production as the reason for this.
