At FC Bayern, the focus these days is on the expiring contracts of Max Eberl, Manuel Neuer and Konrad Laimer. The sports director answers a question about the trio meaningfully.
Max Eberl raised questions about the future of himself, Manuel Neuer and Konrad Laimer in the run-up to FC Bayern’s Bundesliga game at VfL Wolfsburg. All three were recently exposed to speculation as to whether their contracts were expiring.
At Sky, the sports director was asked in what order the contract extensions would take place. “That’s a good question,” replied Eberl. He added meaningfully: “Perhaps the shirt number is crucial.” In that case, Neuer, the Bavarian number one, would be first in line.
The goalkeeper’s situation is probably the most urgent. Neuer’s contract is only valid until the end of this season. Recently, however, there have been increasing media reports that the 2014 world champion wants to add another year. Laimer and Eberl are now tied to Munich until the summer of 2027.
With regard to Laimer, Eberl reiterated Bayern’s fundamental intention. “We want to extend,” he said. At the same time, the 52-year-old made no secret of the fact that both parties have different financial ideas: “There are two points of view that don’t fit together at the moment. We have to find a bridge.”
According to consistent media reports, the Austrian is demanding a salary of 15 million euros. Eberl didn’t want to talk about specific amounts, but he emphasized one thing: “There is no bad blood.”
If Lothar Matthäus has his way, Laimer, like Neuer and Eberl, will have to extend his stay in Munich. The Sky expert praised the Austrian as a “mentality player” who Bayern cannot lose. “You can rely on him in different positions,” enthused Matthäus. “He embodies on the pitch what a team needs that wants to win the big titles.”
