In March, Eduard Löwen had to cope with a severe blow of fate. His wife died of cancer. Now the ex-Bundesliga professional spoke about this difficult time.

Several weeks after the death of his wife Ilona, ​​former Bundesliga professional Eduard Löwen fought back tears at a press conference for his MLS club St. Louis City SC. His wife Ilona Löwen died on March 9th after a long battle with cancer. “Nothing I would say would do justice to who she was,” he said now, faltering repeatedly. “There are no words for the love we shared.”

Löwen took a break after the death of his wife and returned to team training in mid-April. The 29-year-old scored a goal in his first appearance after the time-out.

“Since my wife died, my perspective on so many things has changed,” he explained, adding: “My greatest pain over the last two years has been watching my wife suffer. I know that she is no longer suffering. That comforts me the most.”

Löwen also emphasized: “It helps me a lot to be on the pitch with the team. At the same time, that doesn’t mean that I’m doing well.” He still has a long way to go, “but that’s okay.” In the Bundesliga, Löwen played for VfL Bochum, 1. FC Nürnberg, FC Augsburg and Hertha BSC, among others.
