SGS Essen loses the relegation clash at 1. FC Nürnberg and is on the verge of relegation. What has to happen now.
The women’s team at 1. FC Nürnberg managed to stay in the Bundesliga, while SGS Essen needs a miracle to continue playing in the upper house of football next season. One game day before the end of the season, Heleen Jaques’ team was almost relegated after losing 3-0 at the “Club” and having been in the league for 22 years.
After 58 seconds, the SGS world was already out of control. Fany Proniez took the early lead for Nuremberg. Essen had several chances to equalize, but missed them all. After the break, the “Club” took over the game: Nastassja Lein first hit the crossbar (50th minute), then into the goal (65th). Maelle Seguin increased the score to 3-0 (79′). Before the game, Nuremberg was four points ahead of Essen and secured relegation in the Max Morlock Stadium.
With 15 points, Essen is in second-to-last place in the table after 25 match days – three points behind Hamburger SV, and also with a goal difference that is twelve goals worse. If HSV gets at least one point against 1. FC Köln on Saturday, relegation is sealed.
The SGS has been represented in the women’s Bundesliga continuously since 2004, and the club was in the cup final in 2021. It is the weakest season in the club’s history. Last week, bottom team Carl Zeiss Jena had already been relegated.
