The PSV women have made history by winning the first national title in club history. In a sold-out TenCate Stadium De Herdgang, the Eindhoven team won 2-0 against ADO Den Haag on Friday evening.
The stadium was completely sold out with around 2,500 supporters. Flags were distributed at the entrances of the stadium and were raised en masse when the players arrived. The stands included PSV players Mauro Júnior and Ivan Perisic, general manager Marcel Brands and mayor Jeroen Dijsselbloem.
Championship matches are rarely beautiful, but the PSV Women started the match great. After just a few minutes, Riola Xhemaili opened the score: 1-0 after a clever attack.
The beginning was convincing, but it was not a football show. Good moments in the first half could be counted on one hand. The retiring Renate Jansen managed to score a beautiful lob, but the effort went just wide.
Opportunities PSV
In the second half, PSV remained the most dangerous team and the score was 2-0. Liz Rijsbergen came close with a shot, but Barbara Lorsheyd made a good save. A little later, the keeper was lucky that Laura Strik’s header flew over the goal.
The game was decided fifteen minutes before the end. Nina Nijstad saw the keeper in her way after a nice action, but Fenna Kalma tapped in the rebound: 2-0. Reason for PSV employees to hand out boxes of cardboard championship bowls with the number 1 on them.
Cup final
A party is planned for tonight and the selection will visit the mayor of Eindhoven on Saturday. The focus will then turn to next Saturday if PSV can take the double. In the final of the KNVB Cup, they will face retiring national champion FC Twente at Het Kasteel in Rotterdam.
