SC Paderborn’s nerves are fluttering in the promotion race: Despite an early lead, they are unable to win the home game against Karlsruhe. And the competitors are still playing on the weekend. But 1. FC Kaiserslautern can still win – much to the chagrin of Arminia Bielefeld. They now have to hope for slip-ups from the competition at the weekend.
The 2:2 (0:1) on Friday evening in the home game against KSC was the fourth winless game in a row for Paderborn. On the penultimate matchday they are temporarily in third place in the table with 59 points, but second place SV Elversberg (59 points) and pursuers Hannover 96 (58) are still playing this weekend.
Filip Bilbija (20th minute) took the lead early on, but Mika Baur (37th), who only hit the post, and Nick Bätzner (45th) and Laurin Curda (64th) failed to extend the lead. Instead, Fabian Schleusener (75th) and Shio Fukuda (79th) turned the game around within minutes in favor of the previously passive guests. Sebastian Klaas (85th) still managed to score the final score of 2-2.
No pressure on the competition
But the draw makes Paderborn’s third promotion to the Bundesliga in the club’s history less likely. Coach Ralf Kettemann’s team was in one of the top two places in the table for a long time this season, but recently fell back to fourth place. Now they have also missed out on putting their competitors under pressure before their tasks with a home win against KSC.
Instead, Elversberg could practically destroy Paderborn’s hopes of promotion with a win at relegation candidate Fortuna Düsseldorf (Sunday, 1:30 p.m./Sky) and Hannover on Saturday (1 p.m./Sky) with a win at VfL Bochum.
