Mark Hamill posted an AI image of Trump in his grave – the White House hit back sharply. What the actor said afterwards surprised many.
“Luke Skywalker” actor Mark Hamill shared an AI-generated image of Trump lying in a grave on May 7. The words “Donald J. Trump 1946-2024” are written on the gravestone. The White House saw this as an allusion to the attempted assassination attempt on July 13, 2024: shots were fired at a campaign event in Butler, Pennsylvania, hitting Trump in the ear. Hamill deleted the post with the headline “If only” shortly afterwards.
White House calls Hamill a ‘sick individual’
The White House press office subsequently defamed Mark Hamill as a “sick individual” and stated that “these left-wing radical lunatics […] simply not different [können]”. The actor, who once wielded a green lightsaber, is known as a sharp critic of Trump, but moves in the liberal mainstream of the USA and is a vocal Democrat. The term “left-wing radical” has recently been integrated into the White House’s PR campaigns several times to describe political opponents. Trump, among others, criticized Pope Leo XIV on Truth Social as a flatterer of the radical left, as CNBC reports.
The Washington press office further wrote that “this kind of rhetoric” is “exactly what has inspired three assassination attempts on our president in two years.” Hamill then came forward with a clarification: Trump should live long enough to be held accountable for his crimes. He wished Trump the opposite of death and apologized if anyone found the AI-generated image inappropriate. Trump himself had shared controversial AI-generated images several times in the past, sparking a lot of discussion.
Again discussions about political rhetoric
Just recently, another much-discussed incident had occurred: a man had tried to storm the White House at the correspondents’ dinner. Two days earlier, Jimmy Kimmel had described Melania Trump’s appearance as having the glow of an expectant widow, sparking renewed discussions.
