On the last day of the last summer transfer window, the domino that had brought the Frenchman back to his homeland had allowed Marotta and Ausilio to close for Akanji. However, OM chose not to exercise the right to purchase
Fifteen million euros in smoke and a very heavy salary – of around 5 net per year – which is back to basics. These are the consequences of Marseille’s failure to buy Benjamin Pavard. The choice of the French management is now clear, almost definitive, and so Inter finds itself having to rewrite the future of “Benji (the former) Inter player”. Last September, after playing as a starter in his league debut against Torino, the Nerazzurri became convinced that tactically Pavard was no longer necessary. The Nerazzurri management, on the last day of the transfer window, managed to complete a deal which in hindsight brought a lot of smiles. Because the Frenchman struggled to establish himself in Ligue 1 while Akanji – who arrived from Manchester City to Milan for similar sums – quickly convinced everyone, earning redemption and staying with the Nerazzurri. Marseille’s failure to buy Pavard (considered for some time by Inter’s top management) inevitably changes the scenario, but not the intention of the Nerazzurri sporting management.

From next July 1st, therefore, Pavard will return to being an Inter player. But the Frenchman’s salary (5 million euros net per year) goes beyond the parameters set by Oaktree, especially considering that he would not have a central role in Chivu’s team. The future therefore foresees an immediate, new departure. There is no lack of interest around Pavard’s name – the most frequent calls come from Türkiye and Saudi Arabia – but everything will depend on the formula that will be proposed to Inter. Because the defender’s Nerazzurri contract will only expire in 2028, and the risk of still finding himself with the heavy salary on his shoulders could become real again. This is why the Nerazzurri management will try to say goodbye to Pavard. And not just goodbye.
