Things are going a little better for Mayor Mark Buijs of the municipality of Roosendaal. The municipality announced on Friday that Buijs is conscious and moving independently. The mayor’s recovery process will take a long time.

Mayor Buijs was seriously injured two weeks ago in a one-vehicle bicycle accident in Scharendijke in Zeeland. He suffered serious head injuries and a number of broken bones. Buijs was urgently transferred to the Erasmus Hospital in Rotterdam.

‘Positive improvement’
“The health situation shows a gradual, positive improvement. Mark is conscious and moves independently. But at the moment, every activity still requires a lot of energy from him. He remains under intensive medical treatment and observation,” the municipality wrote in a statement on Friday.

The mayor’s family also said in a response that they are overwhelmed by the kind messages and support. “We are happy with the peace and privacy that we are given to process everything as a family. It gives us strength and helps us in this difficult period. It is also heart-warming to see that our Mark is so greatly appreciated. Thank you for that,” they write.

Breathe in contact with advice
King’s Commissioner Ina Adema is in contact with the Roosendaal municipal council about the situation. Appointing an acting mayor is a topic of discussion to give the mayor the peace and space for recovery. In addition, the municipality emphasizes the importance of administrative continuity, especially in a period when the new municipal council and the new council are starting.

The family says that sending flowers is not desirable, for reasons of peace and quiet and practicality. According to the municipality, a personal message is the most appropriate way to support Mark Buijs and his family.
