The construction of a residential complex for migrant workers in the old grain factory in Hoogeveen continues. There was an objection before the court, but it has now been withdrawn. The permit is now final.

The complex of initiators SVZ and E&A Wonen should be built on the former site of the grain factory along the Dr. Anton Philipsstraat. 420 migrant workers will soon be able to stay there.

Local residents and businesses in the area are not happy with the plans and have been protesting for years. Local residents fear inconvenience. It would not fit in with the neighborhood and there are fears that there will be noise 24 hours a day.

Companies in the area are afraid that they will have less room to expand in the future. They do not think a migrant labor complex is appropriate on the De Wieken industrial estate.

The builders say they are taking the complaints into account. “We now focus on careful implementation and continue to actively inform the environment about the next steps,” they respond on their website.

According to the municipality, the apartments are very welcome. They help combat the shortage of temporary accommodation for migrant workers and create space in the housing market.

The permit seemed to have been finalized in 2023, but it was withdrawn. According to the municipality of Hoogeveen, the correct route was not followed at the time for the arrival of the residential complex. A new permit was applied for together with the initiators.

The city council approved this in the summer of 2025. The last blockage was an objection to the project, which was still before the court. It has now been withdrawn.
