Perfectly knitted: another masterpiece from the virtuoso 60s revenants.
The D’Addario brothers’ band was a topic for specialists for seven years. Music by virtuosos with more quotations than melodies. In 2023 there was a change of perspective: EVERYTHING HARMONY was the Lemon Twigs’ first album to focus on the song. No more nerd music, just great 60s pop. After the equally good A DREAM IS ALL WE KNOW, the third record in this series is now being released.
Once again the influences are obvious: The Beatles and the Stones, the Beach Boys and Bee Gees, Box Tops and The Left Banke. In short: all the harmonies of the sixties. Brian and Michael D’Addario’s true art is to create the songs on LOOK FOR YOUR MIND! to make it sound as if the familiar was still fresh. To make this happen, they have a few tricks up their sleeves.
“Nothin’ But You” initially sounds like a casual number from Alex Chilton’s Big Star, before taking a brief excursion into Paul McCartney’s solo years and letting everything come together in a bittersweet coda. “Gather Round” first quotes the simple Ringo Starr beat, then offers brass between mariachi and New Orleans, to end as a bubblegum glam piece. Everything The Lemon Twigs play has been there before, but never stitched together as artfully as in this perfect 60s quilt.
