Cristian Chivu’s football manifesto can be summed up in a very… pro-European slogan: “The days in which the best defenses win are now over: it is a more modern, dynamic and intense football. We need to adapt”. No sooner said than done. And the numbers confirm the philosophy of the Nerazzurri coach: Inter does not have the best defense – 31 goals conceded, more than Como, Milan, Roma and Juve -, but the most prolific offensive department in terms of separation in the whole of Serie A. After the Scudetto match won against Parma, the Nerazzurri group reached 82 goals in 35 games. Almost 2.4 per match. Statistics in line with the Inter championship won by both Antonio Conte and Simone Inzaghi. Both ended the championship with 89 goals scored, and calculating the average of the team led by Cristian Chivu the projection leads exactly there, to a decimal point higher than the previous Nerazzurri leaders.

Chivu’s Inter still have 3 days of the championship available to improve and surpass those of Conte and Inzaghi. Eighty-nine goals in 38 matchdays are certainly no small feat, but Chivu’s objective is to break through that wall and reach 90. Again thanks to the centers of Lautaro Martinez, present and decisive in all groups. In 2020-21, when Conte sat on the Nerazzurri bench, the scepter of best scorer in Serie A was taken by Cristiano Ronaldo with Juve. But just behind him was the former Inter player Lukaku with 24 and even further back with Lautaro on 17. Two years ago, however, the king of the bombers was Toro himself: 24 centres, followed by Thuram and Calhanoglu on 13. If in the last 3 of the championship – against Lazio, Verona and Bologna – Inter maintained their current scoring average, Chivu could thus overtake both Conte and Inzaghi in one fell swoop. And become the coach with the best offensive department in recent years, as well as winning in his first year. It is the last goal of the season.
