The church square and the school environment were redesigned, with extra attention to safety and accessibility. The space around the church and cemetery was also made clearer and more pleasant. New sidewalks and a parking lot ensure that you can move more smoothly and reach your destination more easily.
More green, more breathing space
A total of 106 new trees were planted. This not only provides a more beautiful environment, but also more shade and better protection against heat. There is now a separate two-way cycle path with safe crossings along the Bruggesteenweg.
The works started in the autumn of 2022 and took a total of 455 working days. The total cost is more than 10 million euros, excluding VAT. The municipality of Wingene invested 2.9 million euros in road works and the design of public space. Farys accounted for 1.9 million euros. Aquafin was responsible for the sewerage works and invested 5.1 million euros. The Province of West Flanders contributed half a million euros, half of which is financed by Flanders through the Bicycle Fund. The Flemish Land Agency supported the design of the reception point with a subsidy of 250,000 euros from the Bulskampveld land development project.
Impact
Alderman for Public Works Jens Danneels looks back with satisfaction: “The works had a great impact on the daily lives of Doomkerke residents in recent years. We are happy that Doomkerke is now also ready for tomorrow.”
Deputy Kelly Detavernier sees the project as an example of sustainable mobility policy: “We are committed to safe bicycle connections between residential areas, so that people can use their bicycle more easily and safely for their daily journeys.”
