The injustice done to adopted children, women fighting for their freedom in Afghanistan after the takeover of the Taliban and Dutch people fleeing the country in search of a new future in Paraguay. The nominees for the Silver Nipkow Disc 2026, named after the inventor of the mechanical part that was the basis of television, were presented on Wednesday evening by board members Renate van der Bas and Angela de Jong. Pauw & De Wit announced.
Qian van Binsbergen won with her first documentary series The Chinese Takeaway the Nipkow Prize in 2023. The sequel The Chinese Takeaway: Home delivery (Omroep Zwart) is, according to the jury members, just as compelling and “the form is exciting and innovative”.
Hila Noorzai made the triptych together with a “largely female crew”. Hila beyond the Taliban (Avrotros). About “brave dissidents who fight for the last bit of freedom for women in Afghanistan”. Noorzai is, according to the jury, “the perfect guide through her native country.”
Also the much discussed Awake in Paraguay (VPRO), about a group of people with conspiracy ideas who are “convinced that things are going completely wrong in our country” and therefore emigrate, has been nominated. Their ideas are “made beautifully insightful in this series thanks to the intimate and as much as possible neutral way in which the ‘woke ones’ are portrayed.”
The special mention goes to The Story of the Netherlands (NTR), in which Narrator of the Fatherland Daan Schuurmans takes the viewer through Dutch history. According to the jury, the most recent season, about the Second World War, provides the Netherlands with “the much-needed historical baggage.”
The winner will be announced on Thursday, June 11, in the Ketelhuis in Amsterdam.
