The attack targeted the American parent company of educational software Canvas, which is used by universities. As a result, names of students and employees may have been leaked, as well as email addresses, student IDs, and messages that users send to each other.
About 9,000 educational institutions worldwide are said to have been affected, a spokesperson for parent company Instructure previously told De Telegraaf.
According to the UvA, the systems can now be used safely again.
Phishing
Because of the leak, the UvA and other universities are warning students and employees about possible phishing. “We ask you to be extra alert to suspicious messages, for example emails that arrive unexpectedly and/or that ask for personal information.”
The cyber group that claimed the attack, ‘ShinyHunters’, was also responsible for a cyber attack on telecom provider Odido in February. The data of at least 6.2 million customers was leaked.
