Red Bull Salzburg could sell another defensive talent for a sum of millions in the summer. While Joane Gadou is set to move to Borussia Dortmund for 20 million euros, Jannik Schuster could move to England for a similar fee. As “Sky” and “The Athletic” report, Brentford FC is working on signing the 19-year-old central defender.
Schuster came to the Salzburg first team last summer from the FC Liefering training team. He was used irregularly in the first half of the season, but has been a regular starter almost continuously since November. He has been on the pitch for over 90 minutes in each of the last nine Bundesliga games. The Austrian U21 national player is now an integral part of the starting eleven.
According to media reports, Brentford FC is prepared to pay a transfer fee of up to 20 million euros for Schuster. “Sky Sports UK” is now reporting initial discussions in the region of 15 million euros. This is well above its market value, which was increased to 3.5 million euros in December. “Schuster was only brought up to the professional squad in the summer, only played a few games until autumn and sometimes played in the reserves,” explains Dorian Schuster, Area Manager Austria at Transfermarkt. “His market value dates back to December. He has been a central defender since the spring and has, among other things, pushed Gadou out of the squad. His market value will also increase significantly in the update in three weeks.”
A transfer fee of 20 million euros would make Schuster the most expensive defender departure from Red Bull Salzburg. This place was previously held by Duje Caleta-Car, who moved to Olympique Marseille for 19 million euros in 2018/19 at the age of 21. Bayern professional Dayot Upamecano follows closely behind: sister club RB Leipzig transferred 18.5 million euros to Salzburg in 2016/17 for the then 18-year-old.
Brentford’s central defense, which mostly operates with a back four under coach Keith Andrews, includes captain Nathan Collins and former Schalke player Sepp van den Berg. Brentford are seventh in the Premier League with 51 points with three matchdays to go and could qualify for international business for the first time. This would mean that the club would have to expand its squad.
