COLOGNE (dpa-AFX) – More than 2,900 customs officers have been checking parcel deliverers throughout Germany since early morning. The General Customs Directorate said it was about undeclared work and illegal employment in the courier, express and parcel industries. Checks are carried out primarily in large depots and distribution centers – i.e. where there are many drivers and delivery people.

Officials from all main customs offices in Germany are on duty. The checks are independent of suspicion and should continue into the evening.

Customs: Repeated violations of the statutory minimum wage

It is often noticed in the industry that drivers are not paid or not paid in full for their working hours. “For example, overtime, time spent loading vehicles or traveling between the parcel centers and the first delivery location are not paid,” said a spokeswoman. As a result, the legal minimum wage of currently 13.90 euros per hour is repeatedly undermined.

“The use of subcontractors can also be observed – among other things with the aim of withholding or embezzling social security contributions and evading taxes,” the customs department said.

Business documents are now being checked

The first results of the nationwide campaign are not expected until the end of the week. The priority checks on Wednesday are just the beginning of the work, said a spokesman for the Cologne main customs office. Later, more detailed checks of business documents and the parcel delivery company’s payroll accounting will be carried out to determine whether the minimum wage is actually being paid.

The Customs Financial Control for Illegal Work (FKS) regularly checks various sectors to detect undeclared work and illegal employment. The focus is particularly on wage-intensive sectors./mhe/dot/DP/mis
