The Toronto Maple Leafs have won the draft lottery and can land top talent Gavin McKenna in June. Fortuna could hardly have played better for the beleaguered franchise.

The chances of being selected number one for Toronto were just 8.5 percent. Four teams, especially the Vancouver Canucks with 25.5 percent as the worst team of the past regular season, had better odds.

The lottery luck is particularly helpful to the new and extremely controversial general manager John Chayka, who was violently attacked by a reporter during his introduction on Monday. The prospect of a mega-talent like McKenna should calm the fan base to some extent after the turbulence.

“You also need a bit of luck, and we had that tonight,” Chayka said loudly after the draw TSN. “This is a monumental opportunity.” The Maple Leafs have only had the first pick twice so far. In 1985 they moved Wendel Clark and ten years ago Auston Matthews, whose stay in Toronto has become much more likely.

The future belongs to San Jose

Chayka once became the youngest GM in NHL history with the Arizona Coyotes, but left the team shortly before the playoffs and was then banned from the league for a year. He was also accused of illegal negotiations with other teams during his time with the Coyotes, which is why the ice hockey community commented critically on his hiring in Toronto.

In addition to Chayka and the Leafs, the San Jose Sharks can also look forward to the lottery, as they will be able to pick number two in a well-stocked draft class. It is the third year in a row that the Sharks have received one of the top two picks – even though their chance of going second was just over five percent.

In addition to 2024 first pick Macklin Celebrini and 2025 number two Michael Misa, the Sharks now have another potential young star after they had already had a long sniff of the playoffs this year.

Finally, the top five is rounded out by the Canucks, the Chicago Blackhawks at four and the New York Rangers.
