It is still unclear how the car ended up in the canal, according to a fire brigade spokesperson. The emergency services arrived on the scene around 2 p.m., but at that time the motorist was already out of the water.
The accident happened in the water of the Herengracht near the Utrechtsestraat in the center of Amsterdam.
Car recovered from canal
A Waternet boat removed the sunken Smart from the canal. The drinking water company happened to be fishing old bicycles and other equipment from the canals around the corner.
In consultation with the fire brigade, it was decided to also remove the car that had ended up in the water. The grappling hook caused even more damage to the vehicle, which was already significantly damaged.
