Pols speaks of a ‘logical next step’. “For years, I have put pressure on companies from outside to translate climate ambitions into concrete action – also through the courts. I bring that experience with me. At Tata Steel I have the opportunity to show that industrial sustainability is not only enforceable, but can also be driven from within.”
Milieudefensie disappointed
Milieudefensie reacts disappointed to Pols’ departure on their website.
“We are surprised by the departure of Donald Pols and very disappointed in his choice to go to Tata Steel, one of the largest polluters in the Netherlands,” said Chairman of the Supervisory Board Marty Smits in a response.
Pols had been director of Milieudefensie since 2015 and became the face of the climate case against oil company Shell.
He now declares that he takes his experience at Milieudefensie ‘inside’. “At Tata Steel I have the opportunity to show that industrial sustainability is not only enforceable, but can also be driven from within.”
