Looking for a new sports director

After sporting director Peter Christiansen was released at the beginning of March, VfL Wolfsburg is still looking for a new strong man. The possible solution might be someone who is already employed by the Wolves. As “Bild” reports, current coach Dieter Hecking also plays a role in the bosses’ considerations.
There should therefore be discussions about promoting the 61-year-old for the new season. Hecking’s involvement as coach is limited to the remaining games of the season; the veteran could then stay at the club longer in a new role. Either as a sports director or as a kind of consultant with decision-making powers, as the paper writes. The former option seems to be the preferred one.
The boss position would not be a new one for Hecking because he already worked as sports director for 1. FC Nürnberg from 2020 to 2024. The long-time Bundesliga coach – only nine trainers have made more appearances than Hecking in the history of the league – is not considered the top candidate for the Wolfsburg management. A return of RB Leipzig’s Marcel Schäfer is the ideal solution, but given his contract runs until 2028, it is hardly possible. The traded Fabian Wohlgemuth (at VfB Stuttgart until 2027) and Andreas Schicker (at TSG Hoffenheim until 2029) are also not available. That’s why Hecking is now coming into focus as a possible Christiansen successor.
First of all, VfL Wolfsburg is concerned about staying in the league. Before the 33rd matchday, the Lower Saxony team are in 16th place in the relegation zone – level on points with FC St. Pauli, who could cause the Wolves’ first Bundesliga relegation in a direct duel at Millerntor on the 34th matchday. Under Hecking’s return, the trend has recently been slightly upward. After a draw and three defeats at the start, there was recently one win and two draws, which is why at least the route through relegation is realistic again. In the summer, regardless of the league, a major upheaval is looming at all levels.
