NH will be present all day at the 47th edition of Bevrijdingspop in Haarlem. This major liberation festival, which attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors every year, is part of a network of fourteen liberation festivals spread throughout the country.

Various artists fly from stage to stage by helicopter during the day. In Haarlem you can get ready for performances by DI-RECT, De Bankzitters and S10, among others.

Haarlem Escalation kicks off

The Haarlem band This year, Eskalatie has the great honor of kicking off the event. With their idiosyncratic Dutch-language ska, the band won the Rob Acda Award in March this year, with which they managed to take pride of place on stage. NH spoke to frontman Daniël van Empelen shortly before the performance.

“It’s very special to do this in your own city,” he says. “The repertoire is there. It’s just a challenge to get everyone on time. That’s already one thing with the four of us, there are twelve of us. Such a large production is new to us. We suddenly have car passes and artist tickets, which is different from just arriving at a pub.”

Ska comes from Jamaica and emphasizes the offbeat. The ‘boom-chak’, as Daniel explains it to the layman. The performance will consist of their own hits such as Bubble Blower Machine, Geld en Macht and Vishoed.

Daniël hopes to warm up the audience, but also to give an important message. “We want to make people aware that living in freedom cannot be taken for granted. And of course we also hope that they will buy a ticket for our album release in the Slachthuis.”
