Chelsea FC suffered their sixth defeat in a row. But that wasn’t the only bad news this Monday.
The situation at Chelsea FC continues to worsen. Even under interim coach Calum McFarlane, there was no success; the Londoners suffered their sixth defeat in a row in the 1:3 (0:2) against Nottingham Forest – observed by England’s national coach Thomas Tuchel, among others.
Taiwo Awoniyi (2nd, 52nd), formerly active for Mainz and Union, and Igor Jesus (15th) scored from the penalty spot for the relegation candidates and brought Forest very close to staying in the league. For Chelsea, Joao Pedro (90th + 3) at least ended the long goal drought with an overhead kick: the club had last scored in the league two months ago, the last home goal at Stamford Bridge was on February 21st.
As ninth in the table, Chelsea is in danger of missing out on international business through the league. One chance remains in the FA Cup final against Manchester City on May 16th. Nottingham, on the other hand, with a six point lead over 17th place with three match days to go, can almost certainly plan to stay in the league and is also represented in the semi-finals of the Europa League.
Five weeks before the World Cup in the USA, Mexico and Canada, Tuchel watched the game together with Portugal national coach Roberto Martínez. In a match with several interruptions and injuries, Chelsea appeared clearly unsettled. Cole Palmer also miserably missed a penalty against Forest goalkeeper Matz Sels (45th + 10).
The defeat was accompanied by further bad news for Chelsea. Youngster Jesse Derry suffered a head injury in a nasty collision during his professional debut. After the collision with Forest defender Zach Abbott in the guests’ penalty area shortly before the end of the first half, Derry went down. He was then treated by doctors on the pitch for around ten minutes. He was also supplied with oxygen.
The 18-year-old was taken out of the stadium on a stretcher to applause from both fan camps and taken to Chelsea and Westminster Hospital for further medical examinations. “Jesse is conscious, speaking and is being examined as a precautionary measure. We wish him a speedy recovery and thank the medical staff for their quick response,” said Chelsea FC. Abbott, who was able to leave the pitch on his own, also had to be replaced.
