Leuven places speed signs on the towpath for cycling tourists and speed pedelecs, but flashing is not easy

Did you know that speed pedelecs – extra powerful electric bicycles – must adhere to a maximum speed of 30 kilometers per hour? However, they can go a lot faster and on towpaths and cycle paths the chance and temptation to pedal hard is even greater than on normal roads. But as always when it comes to road safety: the faster, the greater the risk of accidents. So as a test, the Leuven police are now placing digital speed signs on the car-free towpath between Leuven and Mechelen. One problem: actively flashing and fining is easier said than done.
