The Gilze-Rijen military air base was partially evacuated on Monday afternoon due to a threat. The alarm was raised following a video circulating on social media, showing a man walking around the grounds of the air base. After research it turns out to be an old video.
The video shows a man on the grounds of the air base, where he ‘performs suspicious actions’. Several emergency services were called in to find the man.
It was quickly scaled up to GRIP 1. This means that coordination was required between several emergency services, such as fire brigade, ambulance and police. The entrance gate was closed and officers wearing bulletproof vests walked through.
The military police announced around five o’clock that they assume it is an old video of a man who was previously at the air base. He was then arrested.
Explosive Ordnance Disposal
The Defense Explosive Ordnance Disposal Service (EOD) arrived around four o’clock. They conducted research in collaboration with the Marechaussee. Vehicles leaving the base were thoroughly checked by officers.
There was also an intruder on the base last January. Then a 34-year-old man from Breda broke into the base and fled in a police car.
