Big surprise in Switzerland: newly promoted Thun secures the championship title early and receives congratulations from the Bundesliga.
FC Thun took 1. FC Kaiserslautern as their model and sensationally crowned champions as a promoted team. Coach Mauro Lustrinelli’s team secured the most important title in Switzerland for the first time in the club’s 128-year history because FC Sion provided support and defeated Thun’s closest rivals St. Gallen 3-0 (1-0) on Sunday.
Thun returned to the upper house in 2025 after a five-year absence. A master’s bonus was not negotiated. “We thought it would be outrageous to set a target in the top six,” said President Andres Gerber.
In the past 22 years, FC Basel, Young Boys Bern and FC Zurich have fought for the championship in Switzerland.
Congratulations from Urs Fischer
Former coach Urs Fischer, who worked for Thun from 2013 to 2015, also congratulated. “It’s crazy. I still have really good contact with Thun. Fantastic”said the coach of Mainz 05 on “DAZN”: “At this point, best regards to Thun. Guys, you’ve done a fantastic job. I think becoming champions as a newcomer and doing so in a convincing way deserves the greatest respect.”
Join us for a long time Negative headlines
Thun has so far been known for negative headlines. In 2007, for example, several players were involved in a sex scandal, and in 2016 the club almost went bankrupt. Since then, the fan-run club “Härzbluet” has been collecting donations every year, the equivalent of 1.6 million euros.
Kaiserslautern became German champions in 1998 as a Bundesliga newcomer under coach Otto Rehhagel.
