The number of visitors to the National History Museum in Bucharest has increased significantly since the return of the golden helmet of Cotofenesti and two golden bracelets. This is reported by the Romanian museum.
Almost two weeks ago, the art treasures were flown back to Romania and shown to the media.
It was the first time the works of art had been publicly displayed since they were recovered. According to a spokesperson for the museum, this was done “to give people a chance to see the helmet and let them know that it is back.”
Since the temporary exhibition with the golden helmet and bracelets, more than four thousand people found their way to the National History Museum in Bucharest to view the works of art.
The weekend of April 25-26 saw a record number of weekend visitors with 2,612 visitors. This was the first weekend that the works of art were on display in Romania. Normally the National Historical Museum receives approximately 250 visitors per day.
Last Friday was the last day that visitors could see the golden helmet and the two golden bracelets.
The helmet was damaged and needs to be restored. The works of art then return to the museum. It is not yet known how long the restoration will take.
On January 25, 2025, the works of art were stolen from the Drents Museum in Assen. The golden helmet of Cotofenesti and three golden bracelets were part of the exhibition Dacia – Empire of Gold and Silver, which was on display in the Drents Museum in the months before.
Several people were arrested after the robbery. The three main suspects are still in custody. The judge will make a ruling on June 5.
The Public Prosecution Service has made an agreement with two of the three suspects that they will receive a reduced sentence for returning the helmet and two of the gold bracelets. The third bracelet is still being sought.
