The National Monument on Dam Square in Amsterdam was defaced with red paint on Monday, Remembrance Day. Cleaners were working to remove the paint on Monday morning. The word “genocide” was still legible around eight in the morning.
A spokesperson for the Amsterdam security triangle (mayor, police and justice) said that a report of the graffiti was received at 5 a.m. on Monday. “Then the first cleaners immediately went there. We are doing everything we can to remove it as quickly as possible and have it in order for tonight.”
The National Remembrance Day starts at 6:55 PM in the Nieuwe Kerk, which is located on Dam Square. The ceremonies at the National Monument start at 7:50 PM. The king and queen will then lay a wreath at the monument, after which a two-minute silence will be held at 8 p.m.
The National Monument was built in recent times defaced more often. During a pro-Palestinian demonstration in August, one of the attendees wrote in red spray paint the words “never again is now” on the monument. The 24-year-old man was arrested and the municipality filed a report. It is not yet clear who defaced the monument this Monday.
