Pollution in the Oude Leiearm in Menen reappeared on Sunday after intense rainfall. A greasy, light brown substance floats on the water and also spreads an unpleasant odor in the environment.
According to the fire brigade, this is a recurring problem where grease residues from a company in the Grensland industrial zone end up in the watercourse. During heavy rain, the sewer system has difficulty processing the combination of rain and waste water, causing some of it to end up in the Oude Leie arm.
