After three years in the 2nd Bundesliga, FC Schalke returns to the upper house. Schalke boss Youri Mulder makes a memorable appearance on TV.

Schalke’s director of professional football, Youri Mulder, happily and grinning into the camera, joined Sport1’s “Doppelpass” to talk about their success after Gelsenkirchen’s promotion. Before the interview with moderator Florian König began, the ex-professional made a confession.

“The night was short. I think we were in the stadium until half past six, it was a great party. I was out with some of the employees until seven and then slept for a few hours here in the little room next door,” explained the Dutchman with a broad grin.

The statement alone caused laughter in the studio in Munich. Before that, however, the 57-year-old had already held a beer bottle up to the camera and grinned mischievously. Even then he was sure to get a laugh.

When asked whether Mulder had a camp bed at the Schalke office, Mulder laughed and explained: “My girlfriend came from camping, as any Dutchman should. And she had everything with her. We didn’t put up a tent, but she also had a few mattresses with her.”

Afterwards, the conversation became serious. Mulders emphasized how important the rise of the Revierklub is for the city. “It’s something special for Schalke that they finally have something to celebrate again. The way we performed will stick with people.”

At the same time, he praised Schalke’s sporting director Frank Baumann for having the courage to sign Miron Muslić last summer. At the time, Muslić had just been relegated from the English second division as coach of Plymouth Argyle and had cost Schalke a fee of around one million euros.
