In Haarlem-Noord you will still find the remains of a castle, Huis ter Kleef, in the Haarlemmer Kweektuin. Was this the castle of Haarlem? No, because this was an independent area under the name Schoten for centuries. This castle was built for the Lord of Schoten. What can still be found of this castle? And why is it actually called ‘Kleef’?

In the NH series ‘Disappeared Castles’, heritage specialist Marius Bruijn searches for medieval castles that once dominated Kennemerland, but of which little or nothing is now left. Together with archaeologists, historians and other experts, he searches for traces in the landscape that tell more about medieval Kennemerland. We bring the castles to life with animations and give an impression of what they may have once looked like.

Historical dishes recreated

For years, archaeologists have analyzed the excavated food remains, including from the moat. As a result, we now know much more about the food patterns of the noble residents. What did the lords of the castle in northern Haarlem eat in the 15th century? In this episode we will recreate such a dish with a historical chef.
