A suspect has been arrested in Austria in the case surrounding the attempted extortion of manufacturer HiPP. Recently, tampered jars of branded baby food were found to which rat poison had been added.

The person behind the extortion demanded 2 million euros from the German baby food manufacturer. The arrested suspect is a 39-year-old man, reports the Public Prosecution Service in Eisenstadt. Due to the ongoing investigation, no further information about him has been shared.

Found in several countries

Five jars were found in Austria, the Czech Republic and Slovakia. That happened before they were consumed. It is not clear what the effect would have been if children had eaten the food. A sixth pot is still being sought in Austria.

The Austrian authorities warned consumers to pay attention to the jars of ‘carrots and potatoes’. The tampered jars had a white sticker with a red circle on the bottom and had already been opened. Due to the manipulation, the lids did not make the usual popping sound when opened.
