Anne Mattila, an artist with a long career, has learned to trust her own voice. Mattila, who works as a cafe entrepreneur in Karvia, is currently preparing her new album.
Artist Anne Mattila, 41, remembers how she was warned more than 14 years ago.
– Don’t set up an art cafe like that in the middle of nowhere, nobody goes there, Mattila recalls the comments she received.
Despite the warnings, he decided to listen to his own voice. Now the art cafe in Karvia opens its doors for the 14th time.
– You always wonder if anyone will come this summer, but some of the guests always arrive again.
Anne Mattila turns 42 in May. Singing, painting and running a cafe bring a lot of energy to an artist’s everyday life. Pete Anikari
The courtyard of the cafe building resembles an old domestic country movie. An old cabin building has been transported all the way from Alahärmä to the place. The cafe building and studio have been moved from Vöyri. For Mattila, it is important that visitors get to see her paintings in a cozy environment.
The artist admits that running a coffee shop is not easy these days. The prices of raw materials have risen and the purchasing power of consumers is also tight.
– Yes, with prices, there must be a tongue in the middle of the mouth, so that the operation remains reasonable.
The everyday life of a coffee shop owner keeps you busy until autumn. The working day at the cafe usually starts at 6 a.m., when Mattila bakes fresh donuts and other cafe products in the display case. Soon, the first groups of guests will arrive, and they will be introduced to the places and told about the history of the buildings. When the cafe has closed, Mattila stays with her employees to clean the place. He usually gets home only in the evening.
– Entrepreneurship is a way of life for me, says Mattila.
Meeting people has taught me a lot.
– All of us people are ultimately the same: we want to be seen, eat good food and enjoy beautiful things.

Singing became a matter of Mattila’s heart as a child. At the age of 11, he performed as a master player Risto Ala-Ikkelän with the orchestra. Mattila got a recording contract at the age of 16 and in 2001 a breakthrough hit appeared Asphalt jungle.
Mattila’s new song will be released on May 8 Calm and safewhich is composed and written by the artist himself. The song reflects on how life can change completely unexpectedly. Next spring, Mattila will release a new album, whose style could be described as country-inspired.
– I want to make songs and paintings about what I think about life and what I have realized about it, Mattila continues.
– A small sentence in a song can mean a lot, which can help you cope or get out of the current problem situation.
Mattila was one of the brightest child stars of her time. Now a years-long career as an artist is behind me. Pete Anikari
According to Mattila, the best feedback is when the listener says that he got strength from his text. Over the years, Mattila has also made songs for other artists. However, he has used a pseudonym as a songwriter.
– I have lived in the era when the songs made by singers were belittled. I have noticed that the songs made under a pseudonym have gone over better and some people think they have been more “believable”.
Another reason for using a pseudonym was that Mattila’s name as the author would not arouse preconceived notions about the song.
Today, however, the songwriter has openly used his own name. The band Komiat was born from Mattila’s pen One love story -hit.
– I was in the ship’s store when I heard this song. I quickly went to my cabin and made a song in an instant. I immediately called the members of the Komiat band and they were very excited about it, Mattila recalls.

No age crisis
The middle age crisis does not bother Mattila, on the contrary. The singer, who once had the reputation of a child star, felt that he was belittled because of his young age.
– When I was younger, I always wished that I was older so that I could say that I would decide my own affairs.
At the end of May, Mattila turns 42. When he reflects on how he has changed as a person over the years, he feels that he is much more relaxed than he was 20 years ago.
– When I was younger, I would have held my tongue more in the middle of my mouth in interviews and feared that someone might be offended by what I said, Mattila says.
Today, the artist accepts himself as he is.
– I welcome every year with joy, as long as I stay healthy.
– Every wrinkle of laughter is deserved.
Mattila admits that she is a pedant. Sometimes there may be several painting jobs in progress. Pete Anikari
However, Mattila admits that she is sometimes unnecessarily self-critical about her art. Not a single artist’s painting can be found in the family’s home, but everything has been moved to the art cafe.
– If I had my own painting on the wall, it would have been repainted so many times already, Mattila laughs.
The singer has also learned to look at the world through the eyes of a child: her 3-year-old son Mikael has been her helper.
– Mikael updated me on how beautiful the sky was visible from the window. That’s when I realized myself, how it could stop for a moment every evening to admire the sky.
Mattila’s son Mikael is not visible in his social media photos, as the artist wanted his child to grow up in peace without the pressure of publicity. Mikael has not yet fully realized that his mother is a singer known to Finns.
– Mikael arrived from kindergarten, where he had listened to my song. Mikael then tearfully asked: “Mom, you’re not a singer, are you?” I then told my son that mom is not a singer, I only sing for her.
