This year, the traditional Spengler Cup in Davos will take place without the ice hockey team from Canada for the first time in more than 40 years.
The organizers and the Canadian association announced this on Friday. The record world champion has been an integral part of the tournament, which was first held in Switzerland in 1923, since 1984.
“No agreement could be reached with Hockey Canada on an extension of the cooperation within the available time,” the statement said. However, there is still a dialogue “with the aim of making a return possible in the future”. The 98th edition will take place from December 26th to 31st.
Fixed participants are US Collegiate Selects, Frölunda HC, SCL Tigers and hosts HC Davos. Two more teams will be announced later.
