The Austrian biathlon team is going haywire these days. According to a media report, women’s success coach Reinhard Gösweiner is now said to have drawn conclusions and quit his job.

The Austrian biathlon women are suddenly without a head coach. According to information from the newspaper “Krone”, Reinhard Gösweiner pulled the ripcord after the confusion at the top of the association and announced his departure.

In the last few weeks, the ÖSV had reorganized its top staff and in this process hired the living legend Wolfgang Pichler as an advisor. The chaos began with the 71-year-old’s arrival.

Chaos in the Austrian Biathlon Association

As one of his first official acts, Pichler threw many of biathlon sports director Christoph Sumann’s plans overboard. It was actually already clear which coaches would serve which team in which capacity – until Pichler arrived. Suddenly, according to “Krone”, many trainers and those responsible no longer knew what job they even had.

Gösweiner was initially not affected by this mess. Only: a new assistant coach should be appointed to his side. But that obviously didn’t suit the 54-year-old at all.

The ÖSV has scheduled a meeting for Sunday in which the ambiguities should be cleared up. The “Krone” now reports that Gösweiner informed the association on Thursday that he was no longer available for the job.

If this were true, the women’s senior team would now be without a head coach.

Gösweiner took over the position with the ÖSV women in the summer of 2024. In previous years he had already worked as a coach for the youngsters and the men’s team. From 2020 to 2022 he also acted as head coach of the Belarusian women’s biathlon.
