Thunder showers are forecast for the Miami Grand Prix – and the drivers have little experience of driving in the rain with the new cars. The FIA has taken precautions.

Thunderstorms and rain threaten to disrupt the schedule at the Miami Grand Prix on Sunday (10 p.m. CEST/Sky). That’s why the FIA has an emergency plan at hand. A FIA spokesman told media on site in Miami: “We are monitoring the weather forecast for this weekend very closely.” Based on the experiences of the previous year, there is an emergency plan that can be activated if necessary. Accordingly, it is also possible to bring the race forward by a few hours in order to avoid a possible thunderstorm.

The storm forecast for the race is particularly tricky for the drivers: hardly any of them have experience in the rain with the new generation of cars.

McLaren driver Oscar Piastri won the race in Miami last year. He said: “I don’t think many of us have ever driven the cars in the rain. The weather obviously plays a role. When it rains in Miami, it rains. So we’ll wait and see what happens.”

The previous year provided a foretaste: impending storms forced the FIA to issue an evacuation protocol more than two hours before the start. The feared storm ultimately failed to materialize. The race in Miami is Formula 1’s first after a break of around five weeks.
