Offensive power in the first half
In front of a noisy backdrop in the Veszprem Arena, the two top teams immediately offered a breathless offensive fireworks display. Formative actor was World handball player Mathias Gidselwho scored his fourth goal on the counterattack to make it 10:8 – after just over twelve minutes.
But the shooter on the Hungarian side, Ivan Martinovic, had a spectacular answer ready and sent a powerful behind-the-back shot into the corner of the goal. The first half continued at this pace and at this rate – the Berliners went into the locker room with a 20:17 lead.
Berlin’s first deficit eight minutes before the end
20 minutes before the end of the game, Berlin’s lead grew to a comfortable five goals. That wasn’t enough for an away win because the Hungarians turned up the heat in the final phase, while the Berliners kept failing because of Veszprem keeper Mikael Appelgren.
Eight minutes before the end they fell behind for the first time ever (29:30). Tim Freihöfer’s seven-meter penalty seven seconds before the end made it 34:35, but still leaves all chances open for the second leg in Berlin.
