Risk of wildfires
The bonfires on the island were also canceled a year ago in some places, such as in De Koog and ‘t Horntje. “This has to do with the locations,” Quartel explains. “They are close to nature reserves, so there is a greater chance that the event at these locations will be canceled in the event of drought, unfortunately.”
Also this year, Texel received the news a few days ago that the Meierblissen could not take place at these locations. The village committee then started looking for another location and found a farmer who wanted to make his land available. Last Tuesday it was examined whether this was a suitable location. That was the case and all flammable items were then taken to the new location, but yesterday afternoon that was still the case.
“We understand the approach of the safety region,” says Quartel. “I understand that they have more rules these days and that we have to look further than ‘lighting a fire’. We just hope that this tradition will be honored.”
