The land of ten farmers in Drenthe should soon buzz, flutter and grow more. Together with Staatsbosbeheer, they adapt their work so that there is more space for plants and animals. They are already busy with that in Darp.
Gert Brommer carefully steps over a fence into the grassland. He has a shovel in his hand, which he then kicks into the ground with his foot. After some digging, he pulls out a clump of grass which he shows to everyone present.
“It is herbaceous grassland, self-sown, consisting of clover and plantain. The roots themselves absorb nitrogen from the air, causing the blades to grow. Fertilizer is therefore not necessary. This saves nitrogen, which can damage the surrounding nature.”
Next to Mommer is Theus de Ruig from Staatsbosbeheer. His organization is very happy with these types of initiatives that they carry out together. Over the next twelve years, Staatsbosbeheer and ten farmers will use each other’s land to farm sustainably.
