When it came to the question of who would be Real Madrid’s new coach in the summer, the name José Mourinho was recently mentioned. What the Portuguese says about the speculation.
Speculation about José Mourinho’s return to Real Madrid continues. Now the coach, who worked for the Royals between 2010 and 2013, has commented on this.
In an interview with the Italian newspaper “Il Giornale” he rejected the idea of returning to his old place of work. Mourinho said: “No. My next goal is to take Benfica to the Champions League.”
Recently, reports about a possible comeback for the Portuguese at Real had gained momentum. Mourinho was considered a possible successor to Álvaro Arbeloa.
The 63-year-old is currently in second place in the domestic league with Benfica. Given that they are seven points behind FC Porto with three games remaining, the chance of winning the championship title is only theoretical. But: His team is the only team in Europe’s top leagues that is still unbeaten this season. Nevertheless, qualification for the premier class is not certain. City rivals Sporting still have a chance of overtaking.
Mourinho emphasized: “We have had an extraordinary journey, we are the only team in Europe that has not lost a game.” He also said: “If we win the next three games, we’ll be playing in the biggest cup in Europe. That’s the only thing on my mind.”
In Portugal, if there is a tie, the direct comparison decides. Benfica would be safe in the Champions League with three wins from the remaining games. In the direct duel with Sporting, the team recently won 2-1, the first leg ended in a draw.
However, if Sporting wins all remaining games and leaves Benfica behind on points, they will only be in third place despite their unbeaten season so far. This would only entitle you to take part in the Europa League qualification.
It remains to be seen whether Mourinho would consider an offer from Madrid if he missed qualification. A final decision for the coming season is expected to be made one week after the end of the season (May 16th). The talks should already be underway. Mourinho’s contract with Benfica runs until summer 2027.
With Real, “The Special One” won the championship in 2012 and the Spanish Cup a year earlier. He was unable to triumph with Madrid in the Champions League.
