There will be an underground heating network of 850 meters long that transports hot water from the crematorium to the KULAK. Cremation releases a lot of heat that would otherwise be lost.
“In the long term, I only see advantages,” says Evelyne Terryn, vice-rector at KULAK in Kortrijk. “We will be able to reduce our CO2 emissions substantially. We will emit a quarter less. It ultimately comes down to the heat that we can use, comes down to the heat with which 40 families heat themselves every year. So, it really is a substantial reduction.”
