AUDIO: Luka Vuskovic: HSV’s life insurance (1 min)
Football Bundesliga

HSV has recently lost three times in a row in the Bundesliga. Defender Luka Vuskovic has been out injured for just as long. A look at the course of the season reveals that Hamburg is incredibly dependent on their loan player.
It was a dreary winter day, the temperatures were approaching freezing point, when Mainz 05 hosted HSV on the evening of February 20th. Even the 90 minutes of football, at the end of which the score was 1-1, had at best heated up tempers at times. And yet something almost historic had happened. The North Germans had scored points – and without their defense chief Luka Vuskovic.
The 19-year-old loan from Tottenham Hotspur is the Bundesliga newcomer’s life insurance par excellence. Coach Merlin Polzin’s team only scored two points this season without the 1.93 meter man. The first on matchday 1 in the 0-0 draw in Gladbach – mind you, five days before Vuskovic’s signing.
Second best scorer for HSV this season
According to the data analysts at Global Soccer Network (GSN), Vuskovic stands for “penalty area defense, header control and uncompromising tackling” as well as “a surprising goal threat”. The defensive giant has not only stabilized the defense this season, but has also made a significant contribution up front: Vuskovic scored five goals (one from a penalty) and prepared two more goals. This makes the Croatian the team’s second best scorer behind playmaker Fabio Vieira (5/5).
“Luka Vuskovic does not primarily bring calm and elegance, but rather hardness, presence, depth, timing and immediate duel effect to the last line.”
From GSN’s data analysis
GSN further praises the youngster for his ability to anticipate situations. He also brings robustness, presence and clear actions to HSV. All points that his teammates miss far too often. The data experts see Vuskovic “as the last robust anchor” in a defense that is otherwise always unbalanced.
Vuskovic also has (even) bigger weaknesses
Of course, not everything that is bad without him is good with him. Which is also down to him: The data shows his weaknesses when it comes to shifting the game and passing over longer distances, as well as his acceleration and mobility as well as his overview of the game.
As much as he is good at putting other players under pressure, he doesn’t cope well with it himself: with 12.05 ball losses per 90 minutes and 5.90 ball losses in his own half, he is even one of the worst central defenders in the league. It is no coincidence that Vuskovic has already experienced ten defeats on the pitch.
“I would always like to say world star”
Nevertheless, no one at HSV wants to imagine where the club would be without Vuskovic. And the games at Eintracht Frankfurt (Saturday/3:30 p.m., in the NDR Livecenter), at home against Freiburg and finally in Leverkusen are likely to be Vuskovic’s last for the “Rothosen”.
Sports director Claus Costa recently stated in an NDR interview that he sees “no possibility” that the loan player will still play for Hamburg next year. Vuskovic, who is under contract in London until 2030, has long been traded with the biggest clubs in Europe.
“We’ll see what that means for Saturday.”
HSV coach Merlin Polzin after Luka Vuskovic’s training comeback
No surprise for teammate Nicolai Remberg: “I would always like to say world star, but he is still so young and still has so much ahead of him. At 19, I was nowhere near that far.”
Will Vuskovic be fit in time for the Frankfurt game?
At least the hopes that the youngster can help HSV stay in the league in the final spurt of the season have now been given new fuel. With the start of training this week, Vuskovic was back on the pitch after his bruised knee and bleeding during training – at least for an individual session.
Polzin was cautiously optimistic. But if Vuskovic doesn’t get fit in time, his teammates will have to do the same in Frankfurt in the spring as they did on that winter day in Mainz, not far away.
