Toronto is the 2026 World Cup venue – and much more than that. The Canadian metropolis is one of the most exciting travel destinations in North America. Go on a discovery tour.

When the German national soccer team plays its second World Cup group game against Ivory Coast in Toronto on June 20, 2026, the metropolis on Lake Ontario will be the scene of great emotions for many fans. But if you come just for the game, it’s easy to miss what this city is all about. Toronto is much more than a World Cup venue – it is one of the most exciting and diverse cities in North America.

Toronto is also worthwhile as a travel destination in its own right. The city of over a million people is located in southeastern Canada, directly on the shores of Lake Ontario and not far from the border with the USA. It is the country’s economic center, a cultural melting pot and the perfect starting point to discover both urban highlights and natural wonders.

Torontonians (that’s what the residents of Toronto are called) are passionate about sports. Toronto is home to the Blue Jays, the only Canadian team in Major League Baseball (MLB). The Rogers Centre, a stadium with a retractable roof, has a special atmosphere during the season. Even those who don’t know much about baseball can experience a typical North American sporting event with lots of entertainment and a passionate fan base.

The Toronto Raptors, 2019 NBA champions, are also alone among US franchises. They are currently the only Canadian team in the National Basketball Association (NBA). Worth knowing: There used to be a second team in Canada, the Vancouver Grizzlies. But they moved to the USA in 2001 and are now called the Memphis Grizzlies.

Only around 130 kilometers south of Toronto are the world-famous Niagara Falls – one of the most spectacular natural attractions in North America. Every second, three million liters of water fall 57 meters deep over a width of 670 meters. Visitors can marvel at the falls from viewpoints or get up close on a boat tour (“Maid of the Mist”). Getting there is uncomplicated. It takes about 90 minutes by car, and buses and organized tours also run regularly from Toronto.
