Brighton & Hove have big goals for their team in the domestic Women’s Super League – and would thus make football history in Europe.
Brighton & Hove Albion says it wants to be the first European football club to build its own stadium for its women’s team. It will be built on Bennett’s Field right next to the Amex Stadium, where the men play – with a minimum capacity of 10,000 seats.
According to the club, the opening is planned for the 2030/31 season at the latest, subject to building permits. According to media reports, the project will cost up to 92 million euros. So far, the women’s team has played most of its home games at the Broadfield Stadium in Crawley Town – around 32 kilometers from the club’s headquarters. Individual home games take place at Amex Stadium.
Brighton striker Fran Kirby said: “This is the kind of progress we have dreamed of for years. The thought of entering a stadium designed specifically for us will be revolutionary – it will change the way players prepare and perform.”
According to the club, the stadium should be tailored to the special needs of women’s sports. The plans include wider corridors, common rooms and a family-friendly design. A pedestrian bridge will connect the new stadium with Amex Stadium.
Women’s chief executive Zoe Johnson said: “The prospect of a bespoke stadium built exclusively for players, staff and fans is incredibly exciting. It will capture the imagination of everyone involved in women’s football, not just here but around the world.”
According to the club, it would be one of three stadiums worldwide that have been built or are being planned exclusively for women’s teams, along with Kansas City Current’s CPKC Stadium and the planned stadium of the Denver Summit club.
