The patient data stolen in the hack of software supplier ChipSoft has not been published anywhere and the data has now been destroyed. The company reported this in a statement on its own website.

The hack on ChipSoft was announced earlier this month. Patient data, including medical data, was stolen in the ransomware attack. Affected institutions included rehabilitation centers, general practices, the HiX healthcare platform, the cloud environment for general practitioners and the patient portal.

Data destroyed

According to the company, this stolen data has now been destroyed. “Our cybersecurity experts have confirmed that this destruction occurred in a technically correct manner,” the statement said. ChipSoft does not report whether money was paid to the hackers.

Work is now also underway to reactivate various affected systems. ‘We are reactivating the systems step by step in close coordination with the healthcare institutions. For example, the technical preparations, such as renewing keys and certificates, of the Healthcare Portal and Healthcare Platform have now been completed for the healthcare institutions that want to use them again.’

Furthermore, the company says that protecting customer data is ‘always the highest priority’ and that this has been ‘very important’ in this situation. ‘The recovery process is going well, but obviously requires care and time. We once again ask for your understanding.’

ChipSoft is the market leader in the Netherlands in the field of software for electronic patient records (EPD) and serves more than 70 percent of the market.

What is a ransomware attack?

In a ransomware attack, also called ransomware, cyber criminals penetrate a computer network and encrypt files. Users can only access their data after a ransom has been paid.

Clinical Diagnostics, which conducts cervical cancer screening, ultimately decided to pay a ransom to prevent the data from appearing on the dark web.
