Last season, the Vancouver Whitecaps made it to the MLS finals. Despite the sporting success, the club faces major challenges.

The Vancouver Whitecaps around former world champion Thomas Müller are facing an uncertain future. The Canadian MLS club has contacted more than 100 potential buyers in the past 16 months – with no results. This means that staying in Vancouver is not guaranteed.

In a statement, the club said: “The club has long-standing known structural challenges relating to the economics of the stadium, access to the site and limited revenue. This has made it difficult to find buyers willing to keep the club in Vancouver.” The previous investors want to sell the club. If there is no buyer who accepts the location, moving to another city is possible.

This is not an isolated case in North America: the basketball champions Oklahoma City Thunder emerged from the Seattle SuperSonics in 2008 after the franchise changed location.

The Whitecaps have been playing in Major League Soccer since 2011. Last year the club reached the final with former Bayern professional Thomas Müller – but lost there to Inter Miami with Argentina’s world champion Lionel Messi.
