US President Donald Trump and his wife Melania have received British King Charles and his wife Camilla at the White House. Charles and Camilla arrived in Washington on Monday for a four-day state visit to the US.
The foursome greeted each other in front of the White House and were watched by numerous photographers. They then headed inside for a cup of tea in the Green Room and a tour of the building.
It is the first time in two decades that a British monarch has made a state visit to the US. The visit coincides with the 250th anniversary of the American Declaration of Independence, the document through which the country declared its independence from the United Kingdom.
The British government hopes to improve relations with the US with this state visit, but… the journey is not without controversy in its own country. There was criticism of the timing of the visit, because the US started a war against Iran at the end of February that opponents say is against international law.
