Ederson: The Brazilian keeper flew off the pitch in the Istanbul derby and couldn’t stop after that. (Source: IMAGO/Yagiz Gurtug/imago)

Galatasaray against Fenerbahçe is the biggest derby in Turkey and Istanbul at the same time. They met on Sunday, goalkeeper Ederson was thrown off the pitch and went on a rampage afterwards.

Fenerbahçe goalkeeper Ederson was sent off with a yellow-red card in the Istanbul derby against Galatasaray (0-3) on Sunday. The Brazilian couldn’t understand the decision and, out of anger, punched the frame of the VAR monitor as he left the pitch.

Ederson received his second warning and was sent off in the 62nd minute – for complaining. Galatasaray had been awarded a penalty when the score was 1-0, too much for Ederson. The Brazilian was beside himself and tried to delay the penalty. Given his yellow background, it wasn’t the most sensible reaction from the 32-year-old.

However, in the TV replays you can also see that referee Yasin Kol tries to push the goalkeeper aside with his head during the heated argument with Ederson. It looks like a headbutt in slow motion.

Ederson then had to leave the field and the incident described above occurred. Shortly before the Brazilian disappeared into the players’ tunnel, he passed the VAR monitor, which is protected by a glass housing. He punched this housing with his fist so that the Plexiglas began to wobble.

In the end, things continued to go downhill for Fenerbahçe from the sending off and the penalty. Barış Yılmaz converted the penalty to make it 2-0, then ex-Arsenal professional Lucas Torreira (83′) scored the final goal of the game a few minutes before the end.
