Students from OBS Jan Thiesschool in Rolde have recently rolled up their sleeves. All primary school children made a large King’s Day flag. And this morning it was lifted.
“All groups made their own flag, then we sewed all the flags together and tried to make the largest flag in the Netherlands,” says ten-year-old Liv from group seven.
Together with Julian from group four, Liv had the opportunity to hoist the flag of approximately four by two meters under the Wilhelmus. “I thought that was very cool to do,” she says proudly.
Dozens of children’s hands worked on the flag. “We drew the school logo with a crown on it,” Julian (7) explains. Liv adds: “Everyone in the class has drawn something on the flag, so it really is a shared flag.”
In addition to the raising of the flag, there were also other activities throughout the morning, such as a flea market, sidewalk chalk and musical chairs. There was also a tumbling track where children could do gymnastics and a bouncy castle.
Every year the school does something fun, says Mirjam Pots of the Rolde events association. “Last year she organized a parade and the year before that each class made a painting of the king. The most beautiful painting won a cup.”
And whether the school made the largest flag this year? “Well, it hasn’t been done before in the municipality of Aa en Hunze, so they probably made the largest one here,” Pots laughs.
